Seminar 34: Comparing Heat Pump Technologies: Updates to CSA and AHRI Standards

 –

Program Level: Basic Program Track: Legislation, Standards, Codes, and Guidelines Session Type: Seminar Location: JW Marriott – Indianapolis, Grand Ballroom 3

Summary:
Representations of performance, part-load, and parasitics are updated in the new AHRI 600 and CSA standards covering water/brine- source heat pumps to align with seasonal performance values used in equipment comparisons and incentive programs. Ground-source heat pump application scopes are expanded to include district, geopiles and wastewater systems.

Chair:
Steven Carlson, PE

Technical Committee:
6.8 Geothermal Heat Pump and Energy Recovery Applications

Location: JW Marriott – Indianapolis, 3, Grand Ballroom 3

Seminar 34: Presentation 1: 2023 Revisions to ANSI/CSA C448 Design and Installation of Ground Source Heat Pump Systems for Commercial and Residential Buildings

 –

2023 Revisions to ANSI/CSA C448 Design and Installation of Ground Source Heat Pump Systems for Commercial and Residential Buildings
Presenting Author: Lisa Meline, P. E., Meline Engineering Corporation, Sacramento, CA, USA

In 2013, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Group invited ASHRAE and several other professional organizations in the United States to participate in what has been coined the Bi-National Standard. In 2016 the Design and Installation of Ground Source Heat Pump Systems for Commercial and Residential Buildings, was released and incorporated what had previously been the US industry standard developed by the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA). This presentation will provide an overview of the 2023 revisions which include new sections on District Geothermal Systems, Geopiles and an Annex on Wastewater Energy Transfer Systems.

Seminar 34: Presentation 2: Overview of the New AHRI 600 Performance Rating or Water/Brine to Air Heat Pump Equipment

 –

Overview of the New AHRI 600 Performance Rating or Water/Brine to Air Heat Pump Equipment
Presenting Author: Robert R. Brown, WaterFurnace, USA

The DOE has promoted moving commercial WSHP’s to an IEER metric. The AHRI WSHP standards committee felt the recommended DOE changes diverged so significantly from the existing ISO/AHRI/ANSI/ASHRAE 13256:98 standard that it warranted development of a new standard AHRI 600 Performance Rating of Water/Brine to Air Heat Pump Equipment. This new standard was developed from scratch using AHRI 340/360 as a framework and included the IEER methodology. This seminar will present an overview of the new AHRI 600 standard.

Committee Scope

TC 6.8 is concerned with all equipment and systems which collect, store and utilize geothermal energy or fluids for the purpose of heating and cooling, and with the development and application of heat pump systems and heat recovery by refrigeration cycles including system design, operation, and performance (product design of unitary heat pumps and equipment components is excluded).

Kirk T Mescher Innovation Award

This award is in memory of Kirk T Mescher, PE, an engineer who specialized in HVAC but whose real forte was innovation. Kirk’s design ideas are clever in and of themselves but the courage to implement them in projects and freely share the results underscores his exemplary service to our industry.

The award will be given in recognition of those who demonstrate or foster innovation, simplicity, and energy efficient designs for HVAC and GSHP systems.

$3000 to be awarded in 2024!
